keine hardwarebeschleunigung mit ati 9800xt

hallo zusammen!

ich schlage mich schon seit tagen erfolglos mit der hardwarebeschleunigung meiner grafikkarte (ati 9800xt) herum, bekomme sie aber nicht zum laufen und kann auch den fehler nicht finden:

symptome:
nach dem starten des x-servers friert das bild ein, wobei der hintergrund "zerhackt" ist. eine zeit lang kann noch der mauszeiger bewegt werden, bis auch das nicht mehr geht. es hilft dann nur noch der druck auf die reset-taste.

system:
ati radeon 9800xt
kernel 2.6.11
xorg 6.8.2
ati-drivers 8.19.10

bei der installation hab ich mich an die beschreibung von http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_ATI_Drivers gehalten.

mttr ist im kernel einkompiliert, agpgart und intel-agp als modul. als framebuffer verwende ich vesa.

dmesg liefert keine fehler, soweit ich gesehen habe:

was mach ich bloss falsch? ich hab mich schon durch hunderte seiten gewühlt, alles mögliche versucht und bin kurz vorm verzweifeln, auch weil ich eher ein linux-neuling bin.

soweit ich weiß gibt es ein problem mit den ati-treibern und dem fb bei wechsel von konsole nach x11 stürzt der rechner ab probier mal das x11 zu starten ohne vorher einen framebuffer für die konsole zu verwenden.
Dumm sind die Menschen die schlaue Zitate falsch auffassen und gegen sich verwendet sehen.
Schlaue Menschen lernen aus dummen Zitaten und verwenden sie konstruktiv.

das ging ja schnell mit der antwort!

habe jetzt einen neuen kernel ohne framebuffer gebaut.
der einzige unterschied ist alledings, dass der x-server nach dem start mit schwarzem bildschirm einfriert.
